As you may have already heard, I made it official and filed my paperwork today to run for the Florida House of Representatives, District 49. After years of working in the trenches to mobilize our community into action to advocate for issues like affordable healthcare, equal access to higher education, and LGBT equality, I kept hearing the same thing over and over.......Floridians deserve better leadership than what they have now in Tallahassee.
I agree! That's why I'm running. We need someone from the community who has consistently fought for the issues most important to working families. Issues such as job creation, fully funded public education, and rolling back social and economic inequality. Last month’s decision by the House to walk off the job without passing a budget expanding access to affordable healthcare for 800,000 uninsured Floridians was a real wake up call. We need new voices if we are going to govern this state in a responsible way, and I will be ready to do that on day one.
There's lots of unfinished business left from the days I spent working side by side with Joe Saunders as his legislative aide. We got a lot done in Tallahassee working together for the constituents of House District 49. I would be humbled to be given the chance to continue what we started, only this time as an elected State Representative.
When we elected Joe in 2012, his voice changed the legislature as an institution forever. Florida's electorate is also changing, and now it's more important than ever that we have LGBT and Latino representation in state government.
With your help we can build another winning coalition of support that will ensure our success in 2016. I'd love for you to join me in the fight for our community's working families. We can do this together!
